Search Engine Marketing and Social Media Advice
These days everybody is abuzz about search engine marketing and social media. By this, I don’t mean that they’re talking about two discrete things; they’re talking about how they have the ability to utilize social media for search engine optimization. For a long time-essentially, since social media started-people have been treating these two things as part of the same broad family (online marketing), but, in reality, they should be seen as to be two sides of the same coin.
Search engines have been making use of social media factors to choose what webpages should be ranked highly on their results pages. Generally speaking, they once heavily monitored Twitter to accomplish this. This is due to the fact that most Twitter profiles are public, whereas most Facebook profiles are the opposite (and, as a reminder, search engines can’t index private profiles.
However, this has altered recently; a few months ago, Google stopped utilizing Facebook posts at all, switching over completely to their own social networking site, Google+. This makes sense; Microsoft is part owner of Facebook and owns Bing, so they’re going up against each other. However, since Facebook posts have so far played such a minor role in search engine marketing that nobody really noticed.
So, what you may now be asking yourself; how do I leverage social media to improve my own search engine marketing presence. First of all, what you want is having people Tweet your keywords along with the URL you’re attempting to rank. Of course, you don’t want just anybody to Tweet it (although, it certainly doesn’t hurt). You want a popular person with tons of engaged followers. It’s a difficult quest, but it’s what you must do.
Also, Google+ complicates things a bit. Google+ and Google are so highly integrated that you need to follow it closely. Unfortunately, the partnership is so new that we don’t have too many hints available yet, but check back soon!
