Making money from home is a dream for many people. Some people want to work from home in order to get out of the daily commute, others hope to make an extra income to help with the cost of living. Whatever your motivation, making money online is not a new idea. In fact, there are a lot of ways to do so. However, there are some that work better than others.
When you’re new to making money online, you can feel like you’re drowning in a sea of information. Where should you start? No one seems to agree on anything! There are dozens of recommendations and “secrets” out there, but unfortunately, most of them are scams.
So how can you make sense of it all?
Look to the community. Is there a wealth of people online with a similar experience to you? Do they have blogs/forums where they share their successes and failures? Do they have a reputation for delivering results? These are the places you want to start. Finding the right community is the key to success.
Get a unique idea
Before you can think about making money online you need to have an idea. It may seem obvious, but if you are looking to start a business or do freelance work then you need to have a unique idea. With many members of the online community, there will be other people with the same idea as you.
You don’t want to copy another person, you need to think of something that has never been done before. In this case, you need to come up with a working example. A simple way to come up with an example is to come up with an idea based on something you already know.
This can be your own experience, reading about something, or researching someone else’s experience. Another idea is to come up with an original concept that other people are not doing yet.
Make money online with blogging
If you want to make money from home, you’re going to need to get your hands dirty. Blogging is by far the easiest way to make money online, and it has a growing community of people wanting to help you reach your goals.
Before you start, you’ll need a clear idea of your niche. If you aren’t sure, start with a small niche and aim to grow it over time. Once you’ve chosen your niche, then come up with an idea for a blog. This could be a simple blog with only 1 article or a lifestyle blog with lots of posts.
Whatever your preference, this is what you’ll be spending most of your time on. On your blog, you’ll want to: Write quality articles about your niche. Share tips and tricks you’ve learned. Highlight anything and everything you’ve done to get to where you are today.
Try affiliate marketing
One of the best ways to make money from home is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is when you become a member of an affiliate network where you share the links to other websites that link to your website. In return for your time, you receive commissions on any sales you generate through that link.
One of the most popular affiliate networks out there is Amazon.com. It’s a great network to join because there are a lot of great products to choose from.
You can also try affiliate marketing for services. For example, many hosting providers offer affiliate programs, where you earn money from the people who sign up with your link. You can build a website, based on hosting providers and which one to choose. Then when you write about any of them, make sure you include your affiliate link, so users can sign up.
Utilize Dropshipping to make money
As mentioned, most people want to work from home. Since being at work isn’t an option for most people, the option of working from home is always there. However, most people are either hesitant about giving up their free time, or they haven’t really thought about how they can make a profit from it.
If you want to work from home, then you may want to consider doing something you have experience with. Have you sold products in the past? If so, you might be interested in selling products through drop shipping. A lot of people have heard of drop shipping, but don’t really understand how it works.
How Dropshipping Works?
Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment method that allows a person to sell items without keeping the inventory on hand. Instead, the store owner buys products from a supplier, who ships the products directly to the customers. The store owner then receives the money for the products. The biggest benefit of dropshipping is the ability to have an actual store without the cost of inventory.
In a nutshell, dropshipping is the process of selling products that buyers order but that don’t actually belong to you. A drop shipper purchases products from a wholesaler, manufacturer, or supplier and then sells them to customers without receiving or keeping the product. Instead, the drop shipper receives payment for the sale, and the supplier delivers the product directly to the customer.
Make money on Etsy
Etsy is one of the world’s leading sites for purchasing handcrafted goods, from jewelry and watches to crafts and furniture. Etsy also offers a number of ways to make money with your talents, such as a tutorial on how to make jewelry, an ebook on how to paint furniture, or even how to make a custom pair of earrings.
How to make money from Etsy?
If you have the skills to craft such products you can start a small business online. People can buy from your Etsy store and you will craft them the small jewelry or other items you wish. If you want to drive more traffic, it is a great idea to start an SEO Optimized website at the same time. This will allow you to capture more traffic and sell more products. Just make sure you scale your business to your production speed. If you can’t fulfill orders, people will start to leave bad reviews!
Make your way up
Many people prefer to start off making money from home, instead of earning an income from a full-time job. You can do this, but you need to be willing to do the hard work of investing in yourself. It can be hard and take time, but ultimately, you’ll be rewarded.
Some days you will feel that you are not going anywhere. The important thing is to not give up! You have to put in the hard work. It’s especially difficult when you try to start out while you still have you 9 to 5 job.

5 Keys to Being Proactive
Far too many people in this world resign themselves to being reactive. Have you heard someone say, “life happened to me” or “because of X, Y happened to me.”? If you are reading this blog post, I advise you to STOP letting life happen to you. STOP being reactive and START being proactive. Take responsibility for your life. Happen to live, instead of letting life happen to you. Let’s start by defining proactive.
I love Stephen R. Covey’s definition of the word proactive in his seminal work 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:
“The word proactive means more than merely taking initiative. It means that as human beings, we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions. We can subordinate feelings to values. We have the initiative and the responsibility to make things happen.”
I abhor the saying “it is what it is.” In that short, seemingly innocent pronouncement, you relinquish control over your life to the forces that be. If you are reactive in nature and desire more; if you long for the day that you happen to live. When you crave creation at higher levels, follow the five keys provided below, and become proactive.
1. Take responsibility.
Most everyone today relinquishes responsibility so quickly, it is frightening. It’s not my fault! Have you heard this before? Probably so many times, you want to vomit! Some are quick to come up with excuses for their lot in life.
It’s my parents fault that I’m…
I didn’t go to an Ivey League school…
It’s because of my environment that I can’t…
The list of justifications continues in perpetuity for those who find themselves in the melancholy state of mediocrity. Here is a little secret for you: the buck stops with YOU!
I love Scott Belsky’s, author of Making Ideas Happen, explanation of taking responsibility:
“It’s time to stop blaming our surroundings and start taking responsibility. While no workplace is perfect, it turns out that our gravest challenges are a lot more primal and personal. Our individual practices ultimately determine what we do and how well we do it. Specifically, it’s our routine (or lack thereof), our capacity to work proactively rather than reactively, and our ability to systematically optimize our work habits over time that determine our ability to make ideas happen.”
Taking responsibility for your ultimate success or failure in life is the first step to becoming forever proactive. Identifying what is most important to you, your life, and your goals come next.
2. Set your priorities.
Priorities derive from what you determine significant in your life. People who let life happen to them, or reactive people, often neglect to set priorities. Failing to set priorities renders them ineffective at best.
Proactive people generate priorities from both their values and goals. Establishing SMART goals yields a proper destination for your priority GPS. Have you ever attempted to go somewhere without an address? It makes arrival to your destination quite difficult.
We discuss the extraction of tasks and milestones from your goals later. Let’s focus on some tools that you can use to stay on track with your priorities. Here are three ways to define your priorities:
- The Weekly Calendar.
Create a weekly calendar. Make it your basic time budgeting guide. List your activities, work, tasks, personal development time, recreation, meals, relaxation, etc. Plan to execute your highest priority tasks when you work best (i.e., if you are a morning person, plan to execute in the morning). Keep your schedule handy and refer to it often. As you do so, you focus on your highest priorities.
- The Daily “Things to Do.”
Write down all the things (not on your calendar) that you must do today. Note the key tasks that you want to emphasize. Include miscellaneous items such as grocery shopping, personal calls, etc. This list is a reminder. Use it to set priorities and thus reducing your decision-making. If you are unable to finish an item(s), move the items to the following day’s list. Rewrite this list each morning or evening prior. Use visualization when you develop the “Things to Do” list to help you focus accordingly.
- Monthly Goals.
Write down your goals for the month. What must you accomplish over the next month to achieve the goal? Use this list to develop your milestones. If something is on your mind, put it on this list. The purpose of this list is to develop long-term goals and to free your mind to focus on today.
3. Turn daily tasks into habits.
Aristotle astutely wrote: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” If you want to be excellent, then you must develop good, might I recommend, great habits.
I’ve seen studies where you develop a habit after 21 days of continuous implementation. I’ve also seen a study that claimed 56 days. Arguments aside, suffice it to say that you need to continuously repeat the desired task to develop a habit.
Take into consideration your values coupled with your priorities that we just discussed. From these, you can develop some macro-level goals. Once you generate your goals, develop micro-milestones to achieve those said goals. Then identify the action steps to accomplish the milestones. These become your habits.
One way to ensure that you develop great habits includes implementing rewards. Celebrate the achievement of your micro-milestones. Dinner, an ice cream (maybe not if your goal is losing weight :), a new pair of shoes – these are but a few prizes that you can reward yourself. You will subconsciously want to repeat these actions because of the rewards.
Your habits and taking initiative go hand-in-hand and really build upon one another.
4. Take the initiative.
Don’t wait to be told to do something if you know that it is right. Take initiative! In so doing, you become a leader. Leading by example is powerful!
Taking initiative becomes more and more contagious with each application. You, as a leader, become more action-oriented.
Start with something as small as picking up a piece of trash that you see lying on the ground (wherever you are). Don’t assume that it is someone else’s job! Take the initiative. Build upon these small steps, take action, and you will see remarkable results in getting your work and major projects completed.
5. Get to work.
Never, ever fall into the temptation of idleness. If you go with the flow, then life happens to you instead of happening to life. Once you have decided to do something, take immediate action, even if only a small step towards accomplishing your task, project, etc. By so doing, you see that it can be done!
A huge obstacle lies between you and getting your creative work done – resistance. Steven Pressfield describes resistance beautifully in his book Do the Work (highly recommended). He states, “On the field of the Self stand a knight and a dragon. You are the knight. Resistance is the dragon.”
Creativity, motivation, and inspiration all flow once you begin. If you are sitting in your room waiting for the masterpiece painting or the perfect book idea to come into your mind, you will never achieve proactivity. Start the work, even by one small step, and see the results. Once you commit to action, the worse thing that can possibly happen is that you stop.
You must slay the dragon – resistance. Once you do so, you become the proactive, creative person you are meant to be.
Converting oneself from a reactive to a proactive person requires a determined effort. Follow the five aforementioned steps and realize your true potential. Take responsibility for your actions, set priorities, develop great habits, take initiative, and get your butt to work, and see yourself escape the droves of mediocrity. I promise you that you will see immediate changes in your life within two weeks.
